Abstract: La leggenda della casa dei Baskerville narra che un demonio, sotto l'aspetto di un cane, compare dinanzi al membro della famiglia che sta per morire. La morte improvvisa di Sir Charles e gli ululati che si odono riaccendono la leggenda. Enrico, nipote del morto, minacciato, ingaggia Holmes che riesce, con l'aiuto del fedele Watson, a scoprire l'inganno, che sottostà all'intera vicenda.

Abstract: In un tempo e un luogo non precisati, all'improvviso l'intera popolazione diventa cieca per un'inspiegabile epidemia. Chi è colpito da questo male si trova come avvolto in una nube lattiginosa e non ci vede più. Le reazioni psicologiche degli anonimi protagonisti sono devastanti, con un'esplosione di terrore e violenza, e gli effetti di questa misteriosa patologia sulla convivenza sociale risulteranno drammatici. I primi colpiti dal male vengono infatti rinchiusi in un ex manicomio per la paura del contagio e l'insensibilità altrui, e qui si manifesta tutto l'orrore di cui l'uomo sa essere capace. Nel suo racconto fantastico, Saramago disegna la grande metafora di un'umanità bestiale e feroce, incapace di vedere e distinguere le cose su una base di razionalità, artefice di abbrutimento, violenza, degradazione. Ne deriva un romanzo di valenza universale sull'indifferenza e l'egoismo, sul potere e la sopraffazione, sulla guerra di tutti contro tutti, una dura denuncia del buio della ragione, con un catartico spiraglio di luce e salvezza.

Abstract: John Buchan wrote The Thirty-Nine Steps while he was seriously ill at the beginning of the First World War. In it he introduces his most famous hero, Richard Hannay, who, despite claiming to be an `ordinary fellow', is caught up in the dramatic race against a plot to devastate the British war effort. Hannay is hunted across the Scottish moors by police and spy-ring alike, and must outwit his intelligent and pitiless enemy in the corridors of Whitehall and, finally, at the site of the mysterious thirty-nine steps. The best-known of Buchan's thrillers, The Thirty-Nine Steps has been continuously in print since first publication and has been filmed three times, most notably by Alfred Hitchcock in 1935. In this, the only critical edition, Christopher Harvie's introduction interweaves the writing of the tale with the equally fascinating story of how John Buchan, publisher and lawyer, came in from the cold and, via The Thirty-Nine Steps, ended the war as spy-master and propaganda chief. Abstract: Con la scuola sull'Empire State Building per guardare ad altezza nuvole. Sulla terrazza, quel ragazzo bravo a disegnare e appassionato di pesci, diventa amico di una giovane nuvola. Lei lo porta con sé al "Sector 7", una grande stazione aerea di creazione e smistamento, dove le nubi, catalogate da esperti, ricevono orari di partenza e destinazione. Stanche delle loro forme consuete, le nubi chiedono al ragazzo di essere rimodellate: diventano mille pesci diversi che, usciti dal "Sector 7", nuotano senza peso nel cielo!
