Abstract: The fashionable male may be making a comeback, but early fashion trends centered around what men-not women-were wearing. This intriguing book traces the history of men's fashion since the 18th century, when young Englishmen imitated foreign dress and manners as they toured the European continent. The term macaroni is only one of many explored in this book in sections titled Revolution/Evolution, East/West, Uniformity, Body Consciousness, and The Splendid Man. In addition to the numerous illustrations of extant menswear, the book's vibrant photos capture the 19th-century dandy, a more restrained brand of expensive elegance which became the hallmark of Savile Row; the post-WWII mod, who relished the colourful and modern styles of Carnaby Street; and the 21st century man-ultra-chic in a sleek suit by day and wearing a flowered tuxedo by night. Throughout, this book makes illuminating connections between history and high fashion, traces cultural influences over the centuries, examines how elements of the uniform have profoundly shaped fashionable dress and reveals how women aren't the only ones who cinch and pad their bodies.Beautifully produced, lavishly illustrated, informative and eye-opening, this book will certainly appeal to men and women alike.

The fabric of India / edited by Rosemary Crill

London : Victoria and Albert Museum publishing, c2015

Abstract: This sumptuous book is a wide-ranging yet accessible overview of the making, design, and use of textiles from the Indian subcontinent. Focusing on individual objects, it explores in great detail the materials and techniques used in their manufacture and discusses centres of production, patronage, markets and designs. It is the first truly comprehensive book on the subject, featuring lavishly illustrated chapters interspersed with analysis of 18 unique objects of world-historical importance, including a Kashmir map shawl, Tipu Sultan's tent, and a remarkable eighteenth-century temple hanging from South India and an Abraham & Thakore sari. While many people are familiar with aspects of South Asian textiles - Mughal velvets, chintzes for the Western markets or rural embroideries, for example - this book aims to surprise, inspire, delight and inform readers with an extraordinary range of material, much of it being published for the first time. From ancient survivals to contemporary couture that reflects the richness and dynamism of Indian textile heritage. As well as presenting great historical masterpieces, the importance and variety of basic fibres - silk, cotton, wool - from which Indian textiles are traditionally made is emphasized, and the remarkable techniques of weaving, printing, dyeing and embroidery that have lead them to be prized across the world are illustrated with specially commissioned photography.

Manus x machina : fashion in an age of technology / [a cura di] Andrew Bolton ; photographs by Nicholas Alan Cope

New York : Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2016

Abstract: A stunning look at the paradoxical relationship between the artisanal and the technological in fashion The complex and often ambiguous relationship between the hand crafted and the machine made is examined in this intriguing look at the ever-changing world of fashion and taste. Manus x Machina traces styles of dress from one-of-a-kind works and haute couture created by highly skilled artisans, through the introduction of industrial manufacturing, to extraordinary recent technological advancements applied to high fashion, such as 3D printing, laser cutting, and computer-generated weaving and patterns. The oppositional relationship between the machine, as representative of democracy and mass production, and the hand, as the hallmark of elitism, is explored in its many facets in this fascinating book. Paradoxically, technology in fashion has both advanced artistic creation and obscured the sense of the designer's expert hand. Similarly, handmade garments have come to represent either a nostalgia for lost craftsmanship or, in haute couture, a cult of personality and affluence.Interviews with renowned and cutting-edge designers such as Sarah Burton, Karl Lagerfeld, and Miuccia Prada discuss how technology can blur the line between haute couture and pret-a-porter, and ultimately question the relevance of the distinction between hand and machine. A tour de force in art book production, Manus x Machina incorporates two volumes into its innovative package. The main volume of the book includes a smaller hand-sewn booklet, which features the printed interviews, tucked into the back jacket flap. The outer cover of the main volume is made of three-ply plastic layers with high-frequency weld and die-cut flaps. The paperback cover is die cut (modelled on the punch cards used in the first automated weaving looms), and the main volume includes 5 different paper stocks and silver foil stamping, and is printed with both high-density and ultraviolet inks. The book also features new photography of extraordinary pieces, including intricate 19th-century floral designs by William Morris, handcrafted haute couture of designers such as Christian Dior and Alexander McQueen, and the specatuclar 3D creations of Iris van Herpen.

The Old Oak / regia di Ken Loach ; sceneggiatura di Paul Laverty

Lucky Red, 2024

Abstract: The Old Oak è un posto speciale.

Botticelli reimagined / [edited by] Mark Evans and Stefan Weppelmann ; with Ana Debenedetti ... [et al.]

London : V&A Publishing, 2016

Abstract: Published to accompany the V&A's major spring exhibition, Botticelli Reimagined, 5 March to 3 July 2016 The Florentine painter Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) is one of the greatest artists of all time. Renowned for the iconic Birth of Venus and Primavera, his work has become part of our collective visual memory, influencing product development, fashion design and artists as diverse as Andy Warhol, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Rene Magritte and Jeff Koons. But Botticelli's fame today was by no means a foregone conclusion. Quickly forgotten after his death, he was only rediscovered as an artist in the nineteenth century - and much of what we know of his work has been pieced together from fragmentary evidence; only three of his works are signed or documented. Since then, 'Botticelli' has been interpreted in many different ways, and has led to many questions. How does a painter acquire international fame? What made Botticelli a pop icon? Why are his works considered timeless? What is it that makes him so 'European' that his Venus appears on the 10 cent coin? What we can say - safely - is that Botticelli, more than any other Old Master, inspired and continues to inspire modern and contemporary art.
